Council Housing - Applying for housing

This page was last modified on 11 August 2010

If you are over 16 years of age and have a local connection with Gravesham, you can complete a form to come onto the Housing Register.

Applying for housing

A local connection means you are:

  • A resident in the area.
  • Have close family in the area (parents, children over 18, brothers and sisters)
  • Employed in the area

You need to complete the application form as fully as possible, as this will be used to assess your housing need. We may also write to you for further information regarding your circumstances.

You will be awarded points on the waiting list if you need to move for the following reasons:

  • Overcrowding
  • The need to move to a smaller property
  • For medical reasons, for example, if you are elderly and can no longer manage the stairs
  • Because your home is in disrepair
  • Harassment
  • Domestic violence
  • Anti social behaviour

We will register your application within 10 days and will write to advise you how many housing need points have been awarded.

If you are interested in rehousing with a housing association you will still need to complete an application form to come onto the Housing Register.

You can express a preference on the size and type of accommodation that you would like to be offered, however Gravesham Borough Council will only offer you the size needed for your family.

Unfortunately the demand for housing is much greater than the amount that is available, we therefore use a points scheme to prioritise applications and to allocate properties fairly.

You can collect a Common Housing Register form from the Civic Centre reception, all local offices, by telephoning 01474 33 73 66/67/68 or download the application, using the available link on the top right.

If you require any further information please contact the Allocations Team on 01474 33 73 66/67/68.
