Exemptions

Last updated on: 09-Apr-2021

5. Repossessed by mortgage company

If you don't keep up with your mortgage repayments your home may be repossessed by the mortgage company. If this happens your property may be exempt from council tax.

If your home is repossessed you still own it so you are still responsible for the council tax.

However, the exemption will last until the property is sold or possession is taken over. You'll need to remember that the handing back of the keys before legal possession by the mortgage company does not constitute repossession.
