Air Quality Action Plans

Once an AQMA has been declared we must produce an Air Quality Action Plan and work with Partner Agencies to pursue an improvement in air quality. We've produced two Action Plans as follows:

  • Final Action Plan - A2 Trunk Road and Northfleet Industrial Area AQMAs (July 2004)
  • Air Quality Action Plan - Urban Area AQMAs (July 2006)

The aim of the Action Plans is to identify how we will use our existing powers and work together with other organisations in pursuit of the Air Quality Objective for Nitrogen dioxide and Particulate matter (PM10).  Direct and general measures are proposed to improve air quality both within the seven AQMAs and across the Borough as a whole.

Air Quality Strategy

We've also produced an Air Quality Strategy the aims of which are to address the wider air pollution issues in the Borough and prevent air quality deteriorating by taking action to improve air quality.

The Air Quality Strategy will provide a framework for future air quality issues and encourage partnership working within the Council and with the County Council, neighbouring local authorities, health authorities, transport operators, local businesses, community groups and members of the public to deliver air quality improvements.

If you would like to see the two Action Plans or the Air Quality Strategy please visit the Kent and Medway Air Quality Partnership's website at KentAir.

Air Quality Monitoring within Gravesham

Gravesham's continuous air monitoring stations monitor Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and Particulate Matter (PM10) emissions from vehicles on the A2 Trunk Road and from the industrial sources in Northfleet. Data from these stations can be viewed at the Kent and Medway Air Quality Partnership website KentAir.

Air Quality monitoring is also carried out by passive diffusion tubes measuring average levels of Nitrogen dioxide at key locations around the borough. There are currently approximately 70 tubes out in the borough measuring both background and roadside Nitrogen dioxide levels.

Data on the air quality across Kent can also be viewed on the KentAir website. Weekly and monthly summaries on Nitrogen dioxide, Sulphur dioxide, Carbon monoxide, Particulate Matter and Ozone, where measured in Kent are also provided.

All of Gravesham's Air Quality Reports including monthly and annual air quality monitoring reports and Annual Progress Reports can be found on the Kent Air website KentAir.
