Gravesham will be joining in the nationwide celebrations of VE Day 75 later this spring.

Friday 8 May has been declared a Public Holiday to help commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Europe and we are asking local pubs and churches to join in two national acts of commemoration.

At 3pm and in association with the British Beer and Pub Association, pubs around the country will be asking their customers to raise a glass and take part in the Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of World War 2, remembering the sacrifice of those who died or were wounded during the conflict.

At 7pm, churches will be Ringing out for Peace. Church bells fell silent during the war, only to have rung to warn of imminent invasion. The sound of their peals on VE Day was deeply moving for many and the 7pm ringing commemorates that moment.

More details of events in Gravesham will be announced between now and 8 May. See www.visitgravesend.co.uk for details as they become available.
