What is independent living?

Independent Living Schemes are housing schemes designed for council tenants over 60, or those aged 55-59 in receipt of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

The scheme allows residents to maintain their independence in their home, with additional assistance provided if there is an emergency.

We have a selection of:

  • Studio flats
  • One-bedroom flats
  • Bungalows

Accommodations will consist of:

  • Communal facilities, lounge, kitchen, and garden
  • Some schemes also benefit from a laundry room and guest room
  • Many of our schemes have secure door entry system via fob access
  • Door entry phone system
  • Smoke detectors and fire alarms
  • 24-hour emergency cover via fitted pull cords fitted within all properties

Our Independent Living Officers

Our Independent Living Officer's will visit the schemes. They will complete Health and Safety building checks, and monthly GBC equipment checks within all properties. Scheme Officers can refer residents to various agencies for additional assistance, if this is needed

A Independent Living Officer is not able to:

  • administer medication or provide personal care
  • provide nursing or personal care
  • clean inside the accommodation
  • Shop or cook for the resident

You will be encouraged to maintain the same level of responsibilities and independence as you have always enjoyed.  Relatives and friends can visit you just as before. Independent Living is not residential care or a nursing home and your activities will not be monitored.

How to apply

To apply for accommodation in the scheme you need to register with Kent Homechoice.

Once your application has been received, an Independent Living Officer will contact you within a week to complete an assessment of your housing needs. The assessment will usually be completed within 2 weeks. You will be advised of the outcome and if Independent Living is suitable for you. There may be further questions as we undertake the assessment.

Outcome of assessment

If we find that Independent Living is not the best choice for your individual circumstances you will be given advice on better alternatives. If you don't agree with our decision you do have the right to appeal.

If you are eligible, the Assessment Officers will give you further information on the scheme and about choosing a property.
