Your rights and responsibilities are set out in your tenancy agreement which is your legally binding contract with the council. The terms of your tenancy will have been explained to you when you signed the contract. You should keep a copy in a safe place.

There are different types of tenancies:

Introductory tenancies

We offer an introductory tenancy for 12 months to new council tenants. This is a 'trial' tenancy, where you must show you are responsible enough to keep your council home.

Secure

After 12 months, we will offer you a secure tenancy if there are no problems with your behaviour or rent payments. A secure tenancy gives you the right to stay in your home as long as you want, providing the conditions of the agreement are kept.

The GOV.UK website has more information on tenancies.
