Are you interested in helping us run local and national elections? Each year we employ teams of staff to ensure elections run smoothly across Gravesham.

Minimum requirements

To undertake election or canvassing duties you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age to work as a Presiding Officer or a Poll Clerk
  • Be entitled to work in the UK (in accordance with the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996)
  • Not be working for or related to a candidate or prospective candidate

If successful, prior to taking up the role, you must provide evidence of your eligibility to work in the UK by showing us either:

  • Your valid passport, or
  • Your birth certificate and proof of national insurance number (such as P60, P45 or payslip)

Due to the nature of elections, staff must consent to working in excess of the normal working hours provided for by the working time directive.

All staff employed to work at a polling station must undertake training before taking up their appointment.

The Returning Officer is not permitted to employ anyone who is/or has carried out duties on behalf of any political party or candidate at the election.

All staff will be required to maintain the secrecy of the poll and comply with the Data Protection and General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) legislation.
