2. Single Person Discount

A single person discount reduces the amount you pay on your council tax bill by 25%

Am I eligible?

You may be eligible for single person discount if:

  • you have always been the only adult (over 18) living at your address
  • you are now the only adult (over 18) living at your address because another adult has moved out
  • you are now the only adult (over 18) living at your address because another adult who lived there has died

Examples

You have always been the only adult (over 18) living at your address

Example: Since the day you first moved in to your home, or became an adult (over 18), you have been the only adult living there. You may be eligible for single person discount.

You are now the only adult (over 18) living at your address because another adult has moved out

Example: A lodger has moved out of your home, now making you the only adult living there. You may be eligible for single person discount.

You are now the only adult (over 18) living at your address because another adult who lived there has died

Example: A relative who lived at your home has passed away, now making you the only adult living there. You may be eligible for single person discount.

How do I apply?

If you think you qualify for single person discount, let us know by accessing your council tax account online and filling in our online form.

You'll need a council tax account number to set up an online account. If you don't have one yet, you can register for council tax online.

What if another adult moves in?

If you are no longer the only adult living at your address, and you are already claiming, or have submitted a claim for single person discount, then you must notify us immediately. Let us know by accessing your council tax account online, and filling in our online form.
