Housing allocation

Last updated on: 09-Apr-2021

1. Overview

We are required by law (part 6 of the Housing Act 1996) to publish a Housing Allocation Scheme. This scheme determines the basis for which social housing will be allocated. This applies to both our council-owned and managed housing stock and for registered providers (Housing Associations) where the council has nomination rights.

The existing Housing Allocation Scheme was introduced in 2014 and reflected new legislation at the time relating to welfare reforms and the Localism Act 2011. There have been significant changes to legislation over the past six years and, therefore, the Scheme has been reviewed to reflect the changes.

The new Housing Allocation scheme has been approved and will be updated shortly ahead of its official go live date in April 2021. In the meantime, please see our frequently asked questions for more information.
