“I have been filled with sorrow to witness the images and read the accounts of the violence and suffering coming out of Israel and the Gaza Strip in recent days.
“While condemning the terror attack that sparked the dreadful scenes we have seen since the weekend, my heart and my thoughts lie with those innocently caught up in such unimaginable horror.
“The loss of one innocent civilian life is one too many.
“When violence begets violence, it is ordinary children, women and men on all sides who suffer the worst deprivations, whose lives are devastated, and who must grieve for those they love but who they have lost.
“People like myself the world over enter politics to do good for all. To see such death and destruction is heartbreaking for everyone who values peace.
“I call on all who have influence in the region to work together to end this terrible cycle of violence once and for all.
“It is all the innocent deserve.”
