Opportunity for a new Operational Management arrangement of Gravesend Borough Market is now live for tender.

Gravesend Borough Market is one of the oldest surviving markets in the country, operating under a Market Charter since 1268. The existing market was built towards the end of the 19th Century and has recently undergone refurbishment. The market sits alongside the Old Town Hall in Gravesend’s historic High Street and the area is steeped in history. Despite this, the market currently has a limited presence in the town and is an underused asset.

The council believes that a successful market will complement the existing town centre and the regeneration already underway. It is hoped that it will encourage residents and visitors to spend more time in the town centre as well as providing opportunities for local independent businesses. The appeal to shop at markets still exists and people want to see a unique and varied offer, with a mix of affordable options; but food, drink and events also play a key role in attracting residents and visitors.

The council is offering a 5 year agreement, with potential to extend for a further 2 years, for a new operator of the Gravesend Borough Market.  The arrangement will require the successful operator to undertake all operational management arrangements of the Borough Market.  To support its success, the Council are offering an initial financial support package which can be used to help with mobilisation, set-up and operation costs over the first two years.
