Gravesham residents can now put glass out for recycling with their fortnightly kerbside collection.

With no separate container needed for glass items, households can rinse them, put the lids or caps back on and pop them in with the rest of their recycling.

Welcoming the move, Cllr Emma Morley, Gravesham Borough Council’s cabinet member for Operational Services, said: “Up until now we have not been collecting glass items as the sorting plant where we drop off our recycling was unable to separate it from other products.

“This meant that any glass we collected would have been to be used as a material for low quality aggregates, rather than being truly recycled into new glass bottles or jars.

“That’s why we’ve encouraged you to use recycling banks for all your glass items, as we know their contents go towards making new glass products.

“But updated technology at the sorting plant means glass can now be separated from other materials and sent to be recycled.”

Gravesham already recycles 40 per cent of the household waste it collects every week and is hoping to increase that through glass recycling, helping it towards its climate change ambitions.
