Two drop-in sessions on how to make the most of the history and heritage of Gravesend’s New Tavern Fort, Chantry and gardens are taking place in the town in October.

The sessions are open to all interested and will help shape a bid for Heritage Lottery Funding for the sites, and there will be the opportunity to respond to a number of interactive exercises.

The project is being led by Lucy Medhurst, who said: “Myself and colleagues are working to put together a Heritage Lottery Fund bid, and we want to ensure that in its creation, we represent the views of local people.

“We will be asking several questions in engaging interactive sessions, including: How can Gravesend’s heritage be enhanced? How can this bring these sites to life for the community and visitors? What is most important to you? What do you like about the site? What would you like to see that isn’t on offer at the moment?

“Everyone’s view is important and will be welcomed as we draft our bid.”

Cllr Deborah Croxton, Gravesham Borough council’s cabinet member for Community and Leisure, said: “The area around New Tavern Fort and The Chantry is at the very heart of Gravesend’s riverside history and heritage.

“The opportunity to bid for Heritage Lottery funding for the area is welcome, and it is important that the views of all those who care for and have an interest in our history are taken into account.

“Please do come along and let us know your views.”

The sessions are:

  • Wednesday 16 October from 3.30pm to 5.30 pm, at Chantry Primary School, Ordnance Rd, Gravesend DA12 2RL.
  • Saturday 19 October from 12.30pm to 4.30 pm, Gravesend Central Library, Windmill Street, Gravesend, DA12 1BE.

You can also complete the online survey with a chance for one respondent to win £100 in food vouchers.
