Community tennis courts at Windmill Gardens and Woodlands Park in Gravesend have reopened as part of a £120,000 renovation.
The renovation was funded by the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation's Park Tennis Project and Gravesham Borough Council, and delivered by the LTA.
Through the Parks Tennis Project, the LTA is delivering the biggest ever investment in parks tennis facilities across Britain, which has been used to transform five courts across the local area.
The courts have undergone extensive work to ensure their viability for years to come, including resurfacing, painting, new nets and gate entry system technology. The final colour spray at Woodlands Park, Wombwell Park and the third court at Windmill Gardens will be taking place in Spring 2025, as these works are weather dependent. Until then, temporary lines have been added so the courts can be used.
This nationwide programme of investment is seeing thousands of existing park tennis courts in poor or unplayable condition brought back to life for the benefit of communities across the country, providing vital opportunities for children and adults to get active.
All courts are now available to book Park Tennis in Gravesham website.
New booking systems and gate access technology means it is now easier to get on court by booking in advance to guarantee availability.
A new annual tennis pass will be introduced, alongside pay and play, and free court time to ensure that the courts are maintained at their new high standard for years to come.
Launching on Saturday 17 November at 10am are the Barclays Free Park tennis sessions on the courts at Windmill Gardens, providing regular opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and play. Find out more information and book your free space.
The refurbished courts will also host Local tennis leagues, giving people the opportunity to get involved in friendly and social local competitions.
Cllr Deborah Croxton, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure said:
“The refurbished courts look fantastic, and I hope they inspire tennis players old and new to get out and play.
“These improvements have only been possible through working in partnership with the LTA, and I thank them for their support in serving up such high-quality sports facilities.”
Scott Lloyd, LTA Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted to see park tennis courts across Gravesham officially re-open to the public, and in better shape than ever.
“Park tennis courts are vital for providing people with opportunities to pick up a racket, and we want as many people as possible, of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, to enjoy playing tennis and being active. Thanks to this investment the sport will be opened up to more players, for years to come.”
