Gravesham Borough Council is backing a bid to pick litter from the borough’s streets and public spaces during Britain’s favourite environmental charity’s clean-up campaign.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean campaign runs from 21 March - 6 April, giving residents across Gravesham a chance to show they love where they live by taking part in the mass action litter pick.
The charity is asking the public to pledge to pick one bag or more of litter from streets, parks, beauty spots and beaches to protect our vibrant communities and precious wildlife habitats.
During the Great British Spring Clean 2024, volunteers went on more than 70 litter picks and collected 250 sacks of litter.
If you are interested in organising a litter pick in your area during the Great British Spring Clean, let the council know by emailing street.champions@gravesham.gov.uk
Street Champions - Day of Action
Gravesham Borough Council is also hosting a Street Champions Day of Action at Windmill Hill on Monday 24 March from 10:30am until 12 noon.
For more information and to sign-up, please visit our community engagement portal.
Our teams cannot be everywhere, all of the time and unfortunately while people continue to drop litter, there will be litter on the streets. That's why we are so grateful to our Street Champions who support us by keeping their immediate local area clear of litter.
Impact of the Great British Spring Clean
According to Keep Britain Tidy, last year:
- 97% of participants agreed that they felt they had made a difference to their local area.
- 84% of people who took part in the Great British Spring Clean agreed that they felt more pride for their local area
Encouraging local residents to take part, Cllr Emma Morley, Gravesham Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Operational Services, said:
“We are blessed in Gravesham to have hundreds of Street Champions, local people who take pride in where they live and give their own time to keep it clear of litter.
“We value their support which, when coupled with the 8.5 tonnes of litter a week collected by our own waste crews, really makes a difference.
“The Great British Spring Clean is a chance for others to join them in the battle against litter.
“I hope as many as possible will take part and will be inspired to sign up as Street Champions and keep their corner of Gravesham pristine.”
The Great British Spring Clean brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to make a difference to the environment on our doorstep.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, said: “We are so grateful for the game-changing support from Gravesham Borough Council.
“The Great British Spring Clean is a fantastic way for councils to support residents to really show their pride in where they live, and connect with like-minded people, while taking serious and immediate action to protect the environment on their doorstep.
“During this year’s campaign, we are highlighting that the environment belongs to everyone, and that everyone is welcome to join in with our activities and celebrate the 10th Great British Spring Clean.
“We are humbled to see our army of #LitterHeroes volunteers carrying out these acts of kindness to make the planet a cleaner, safer place for our future generations.”
