Cecil Road school’s public pool was among the first to benefit in Gravesham from the Pride in Place programme.
Last year it was announced the council was to receive £1.5 million as part of the Government’s Pride in Place programme, a £5 billion national scheme designed to support communities across the country by investing in local high streets, public spaces, and community facilities. The funding allocated to Gravesham is being directed towards projects that are backed by the local community and deliver visible improvements for residents.
Among those allocated funding in the second round of grants are:
- Gordon Lodge: £220,000 for works to bring this historic building back up to a condition in which it can be let at a peppercorn rent to a community group.
- £150,000 for new interactive play parks at St Gregory’s, Wombwell Park, and Gravesend Promenade.
- £10,000 towards a Christmas tree pit at The Bay, Vigo, including the installation of a Christmas tree with lights.
- Replacing windows and doors at the Prom Café, Gravesend, to maintain the existing façade while improving energy efficiency. £50,000.
- £50,000 for the refurbishment of the Fort Gardens bandstand.
- Transforming the former bowls green at Windmill Hill into a feature garden. £30,000.
- £50,000 to help Gravesend Cemetery achieve Green Flag status.
- £20,109 for extra litter and recycling bins across the borough.
Announcing the latest funding, Cllr John Burden, Leader of Gravesham Borough Council, said:
“The money we secured through the Pride in Place programme is already making a real difference across the borough, and these latest awards will continue this great work."
Details have been revealed of the latest community projects to be supported by Pride in Place funding thanks to Gravesham Borough Council.

Projects already completed or which are underway from the first round of funding include the refurbishment of the Cecil Road Primary and Nursery School public pool, including a new liner, water filter upgrade, and ventilation system; improved disabled access and essential repairs at Higham Memorial Hall; a range of improvements including the installation of a wheelchair ramp at Cobham sports pavilion; and the refurbishment of the public toilets at Camer Park, Meopham.
PiP funding has also been allocated to improve Northfleet High Street, through providing shop front and premises capital improvement grants.

Works at the Clive Road entrance to Gravesend Station which has been jointly funded by Pride in Place and Lower Thames Crossing are due to complete shortly.
