Environmental enforcement officer discovering large cannabis factory

An investigation into a fly-tip in a rural area has led to the discovery of a large cannabis factory in Medway.

Our Environmental Enforcement team found 30 sacks of waste including signs of illegal cannabis growing. This was following a reported fly-tip in Batts Road, Luddesdown back in May. Investigations led to an address in Chatham, where they believed the waste came from, plus a vehicle potentially involved.

Working with Kent Police, a warrant was issued for a property in Dunlin Drive, St Mary’s Island, Chatham.

Officers gained entry to the address and found 160 cannabis plants growing. Waste from the cultivation was found in the garage, awaiting possible further fly-tipping.

One person was arrested at the scene.

Following the joint operation, Cllr Shane Mochrie-Cox, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure, said: “The rural areas of our borough suffer from many incidents where the waste from illegal cannabis cultivation is fly-tipped.

“These often occur in isolated areas of natural beauty and have a serious impact on the environment and local communities as the waste dumped includes large amounts of contaminated compost, plastic and chemicals.”

He added that the Team attend all reports involving the fly-tipping of suspected cannabis, including the growing of. They examine waste recovered, working with police to help their investigations.

“Fly-tipping is often linked to organised criminal gangs, none more so than where it is a by-product of large-scale illegal cannabis cultivation. This is often done by multi-national organised crime groups who use properties under the guise of legitimate renters.

“Their activities often involve human trafficking and modern-day slavery.

“The cultivations involve the use of a large amounts of electricity taken illegally from the mains supply, often through dangerous wiring. There is always the likelihood of fire and a serious risk to neighbouring properties.

“We will continue to work closely with our colleagues in Kent Police to tackle illegal drug production and the offences resulting from it.”
