Heritage and conservation

1. Overview

The contribution historic areas make to our quality of life is well known, links to the past giving us a sense of continuity and reassurance. The combination of building traditions and settlement patterns that survive over time give an area its unique character and sense of space. This in turn can act as a catalyst for regeneration and inspire well designed new development, bringing economic and social benefits to an area.

The Local Plan Core Strategy includes specific policies for the protection of the historic environment and seeks to protect conservation areas, historic buildings, archaeology and scheduled monuments.
