Why Gravesham?

Last updated on: 09-Apr-2021

3. Facts and figures

We have a resident population of 105,261 (2014 mid-year estimate Census) with 80% of these people living within the urban area of Gravesend and Northfleet. There is potential for this figure to rise when new homes and jobs are created within the Thames Gateway growth strategy.

Jobs and Salaries

There are 25,800 jobs in our borough, with about 25,815 people commuting into London and outside Gravesham for work. This is about the same figure as the people coming into Gravesham to work.

Wage Rates

Average weekly full time earnings were £536.60 in 2014 (Source: 2014 Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings). This is below the South East average of £567.00.

Gravesham has a strong local business base with 3,200 registered businesses of which 80% are businesses employing less than 10 people. Complementing the sizeable national and international firms that are located within the borough, such as Comma Oil & Chemicals Ltd, Kimberly Clark, Rodenstock, and Britannia Refined Metals (part of Glencore), the presence of smaller businesses gives strength to and underpins the local economy and clearly demonstrates Gravesham's attractiveness as a place for enterprise.

We are committed to actively supporting business. We currently have 900 members in our local business networking and support group - Gravesham Business Network. The idea of the group is primarily to stimulate local business to business, new business collaborations among members and promote members' special offers and services. Along with our partners, we use the network to inform members of business support workshops, networking opportunities and other events that we think would be of interest. As part of the network we run free business networking events on a quarterly basis that typically attract between 80 – 120 attendees.
