Why Gravesham?

Last updated on: 09-Apr-2021

4. Transport links

The borough benefits from an excellent road network that links the area with the rest of the UK and Continental Europe through the Channel Tunnel and Port of Dover.

Direct High Speed 1 services from Gravesend Railway Station to London St Pancras bring Gravesend closer than any other Kent town to the Capital by rail and with a journey time of 22 minutes, this is faster than areas in Zones 3 to 6 of the London underground system.

Rail

In addition to the High Speed 1 rail service to London St Pancras in 22 minutes, Gravesham is served by Southeastern Metro 1 and Metro 2 main line services to London Charing Cross, London Waterloo, London Bridge, London Victoria and the Channel Ports. There is also a long-term strategic case being made to bring Crossrail east of Abbey Wood to connect with Ebbsfleet International Station and potentially Gravesend in the future.

River

Gravesham is unique in enjoying an enviable 11km waterfront on the River Thames and has a long standing maritime connection. The Port of London Authority's main offices are based in the town and much of the area's deep water wharfage is used to transport commercial materials.

Companies that have chosen Gravesend due to the area's locational advantages and deep wharfage facilities include Lafarge Cement UK Ltd, Brett Aggregates, Stema Shipping, Britannia Refined Metals (part of Glencore) and leading tug operator Svitzer Towage.
