Bandings and what to pay

Last updated on: 16-Dec-2020

2. How to appeal the band you're in

We don't set the banding of your property and can't change it. It's the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) that does this.

If you think your banding is wrong, you will need to contact the VOA to try to challenge it.

Until any time that your band is changed you must pay the council tax that's on your bill. If you don't then you could receive a summons and have to pay extra costs.

There are certain circumstances when you can formally challenge a council tax band. These are:

  • When you have become the new council tax payer for a property and you disagree with the list entry
  • If you think there has been a material reduction in the value of the property
