Located in the beautiful surroundings of New Tavern Fort Gardens, Milton Chantry is the oldest surviving building in Gravesham.

This remarkable medieval structure has witnessed centuries of change, serving as a chapel, family home, inn, military barracks and now welcoming visitors as a heritage center.

Its foundations date back to 1189, when it was believed to serve as a leper hospital and then was re-founded in 1321 by Aymer de Valence, Earl of Pembroke. Milton Chantry has served many purposes throughout its long history, including a hospital, Tudor chantry chapel, public house, military barracks and a Second World War gas decontamination facility.

Today, visitors can learn about its remarkable story through a free audio guide, travelling back in time to discover the many layers that have shaped this unique location.

Visitor information

Milton Chantry is owned by Gravesham Borough Council under a deed of Guardianship with English Heritage. The site is operated by Thames Defence Heritage.

Located within New Tavern Fort Gardens, adjacent to New Tavern Fort.

Opening times

The Chantry Heritage Centre is open April to September, weekends only from 12 noon to 5pm.

Admission

Entry is free. Some special events may require advance booking.

Accessibility

Due to the historic nature of the building, sit is not accessible for wheelchair users. A number of steps lead to the first floor which has uneven floors and low beams.
