Under schedule 4 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 a local authority can introduce a street trading regime.
Street trading is defined as selling or exposing or offering for sale any articles in a street, or similar area to which the public have access without payment.
A street can be designated as a:
- licence street, where you need a licence to trade;
- consent street, where you need a consent to trade; or
- prohibited street, where you can’t trade.
Proposal
It is our intention to establish a new regime that permits well controlled street trading, which can bring additional vibrancy and energy to communities and local economies.
Before a regime can be implemented a resolution must be drafted detailing the streets and their designations.
We have also made the decision to have a Street Trading Policy, which provides guidance as to the requirements and expectations for applicants.
Consultation
The consultations on the draft resolution and policy have begun.
You can have your say by visiting the Go Vocal platform, reviewing the resolution and policy there and submitting any comments through the online survey.
