Transport Quarter

The Transport quarter has been delivered in three phases and improves rail, bus, bike and pedestrian links in the town centre. The project was funded by the South-East Local Enterprise Partnership’s Local Growth Fund and the Strategic Transport Infrastructure Programme.

Phase 1

Changes to the town centre traffic flow and the creation of a  ‘Community Square’

Separately, Gravesend Railway Station was upgraded with new and extended platforms, an accessible bridge and a cycle hub located in Rathmore Road. The upgrade to the station work was paid for by the government’s Access for All programme and Network Rail in 2014

Phase 2

Construction of the new Rathmore Road link, a new station forecourt and a redesigned Rathmore Road car park. This allowed the diversion of the one-way system south of the railway and released space for the new transport interchange.

Phase 3

The Final phase was worked up by Kent County Council and includes:

  • 4 new bus stops on Barrack Row

  • the restriction of Barrack Row to buses only

  • more pedestrian space and prioritised crossings

  • 2 Fastrack stops and Sapphire service improvements on Garrick Street

  • provision for an electric bus charging point and

  • a new public access toilet facility in Barrack Row (funded by Gravesham Borough Council).
