Food waste
The Council collects food waste from more than 90% of households in the borough.
Your food waste should be put in your food bin. This may be a 23 litre black bin with an orange lid if you live in a house, or may be a larger 140 litre black wheelie bin if you live in a flat.’
What you should put in your food bin
- Cooked and uncooked food
- Eggshells
- Meat and bones
- Plate scrapings
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
- Vegetable peelings
What you shouldn't put in your food bin
- Household rubbish
- Garden waste or clippings
- Soil
- Liquids
- Nappies
- Plastic bags
- Pet waste or litter
- Sanitary products
When will it be collected?
Food waste is collected every week on the same day as your refuse and recycling collections. You can find out what day your food waste is collected on by visiting our Bin collection day checker.
Remember to put your bin out by 7am on your collection day. Please make sure that the handle is in the 'locked' position.
What happens to food waste after its collected?
Approximately 3,000 tonnes of food waste is collected from Gravesham households each year. This goes to Blaise Farm near Kings Hill to make compost.
