Help with your energy bills
We know that many of our residents, especially those on low incomes or with vulnerabilities can face living in cold, poorly insulated homes. With the cost of gas and electricity going up now is the time to review your energy consumption.
You may be entitled to claim for discounts or help towards energy bills if you are:
- are on a low household income
- claiming specific benefits
- have a medical condition which makes you vulnerable to the cold
Winter Fuel Payment
If you were born before 25 September 1957 you could get between £250 and £600 to help you pay your heating bills. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’.

Warm Home Discount Scheme
You may be eligible for £150 discount on your bills if you get Pension Credit or live in a low-income household.

Cold Weather Payment
Cold weather payments are different from winter fuel payments. It depends on forecasted cold weather spells that last for 7 consecutive days. The scheme will reopen in November 2023.
and/or experience high heating costs due to ineffective insulation or heating measures.
Support with Energy Cost Arrears
Some utility companies offer help to customers who are struggling to pay their energy bills
- British Gas Energy Trust - apply for a grant on the British Gas Energy Trust website
- Scottish Power Hardship Fund - apply for a grant on the Scottish Power Hardship Fund website
- Ovo Energy Fund - apply for a grant on the Ovo Energy Fund website
- E.ON Energy Fund - apply for a grant on the E.ON Energy Fund website
- E.ON Next Energy Fund - apply for a grant on the E.ON Next Energy Fund website
- EDF Energy Customer Support Fund - apply for a grant on the EDF Energy Customer Support Fund website
- Bulb Energy Fund - apply for a grant on the Bulb Energy Fund website
- Octopus ‘Octo Assist Fund’ - apply for a grant on the Octopus website
If you can’t get a grant from your supplier, check if you can get a grant from the British Gas Energy Trust . These grants are available to anyone - you don’t have to be a British Gas customer.
The Simple Energy Advice website has advice on ways to save energy such as:
- insulating your loft and cavity walls
- Draught-proofing windows and doors
- Installing double glazing
You can also find out if you are eligible for a home energy grant to help pay for things such as loft insulation.
