2. Benefit cap

The Benefit Cap affects working age claimants only.

The cap will apply to the combined income from benefits received due to not working, plus Child Benefit and Child Tax Credits.

The maximum amount of benefit paid will be:

  • £500 per week for couples and lone parents
  • £350 per week for single adults

Housing Benefit payments will be reduced for anyone who is affected by the Benefit Cap. More details regarding the benefit cap can be found on the GOV.UK website.

From 7 November 2016 the benefit cap rates have reduced. The rates that will apply in Gravesham are:

  • £384.62 per week for couple and lone parents with children
  • £257.69 per week for single adults

There's also an online calculator which you can use to get an estimate of how much your Housing Benefit could be reduced by if the amount of benefit you receive is more than the cap limits and your circumstances remain the same until the cap is applied.
